Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is one of the most famous tropical Australian holiday destinations

A gorgous tropical island in the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island is not just a resort but a small town that offers everything from snorkelling right off the beach to reef trips to bushwalks and swim up bar time. It’s a gateway to plenty of tours to the Great Barrier Reef or a destination all by itself.

The diversity of activities and accommodation mean it is good for almost everyone.

You can be as active (bushwalks, watersports, gym etc) or relaxed (pool, spa and beach)as you like, eat out or self cater and find activities appropriate for kids, adult kids, couples, solos and groups.

I recently visited again for 5 glorious nights in September 2022 and I can’t stop looking at my photos wishing I was back there.

Hamilton Island Accommodation

Hamilton Island Resort is actually 5 different resorts spread across the island with lots of shared facilities and business like restaurants and shops both in the hotels and the little town centre. The official Hamilton Island Resort Accommodation options are:

  • Reef View Hotel
  • Palm Bungalows
  • Beach Club Resort (Adults Only)
  • Qualia (Adults only + A Luxury Lodge of Australia)
  • Hamilton Island Holiday Homes (their resort managed holiday homes)

When you book the resort hotel rooms you can get deals that include breakfast and non motorised watersports like snorkel hire, stand up paddle boards etc. It takes all the stress out of holidays knowing breakfast is covered and that you have plenty of free things to do on the beach.

The island has a special classification as an ‘Integrated Tourism Resort’ which basically means it is a mix of the actual resort owned properties and facilities as well as private hotels and holiday houses and the other business like restaurants, shops and tour companies.

Hamilton Island Apartments is one of the biggest hotels on the Island that is not owned by the resort. They are a really great option if you want to have cooking facilities and have their own freshly renovated pool.

I am writting a more detailed guide to these choices which I will link to once its done 🙂 In the meantime, read about my stay at the Reef View Hotel.

The beautiful Bougainvillea pool has tropical landscaping and views over Catseye Beach.

Hamilton Island is not just a resort, it’s an Island suburb. Unless you are staying in Qualia which has its own facilities, the main resort features like the swimming pools, buffet breakfast and watersports hire are all clustered around the Catseye Beach side of the Island.

Great Barrier Reef Trips & Tours

The Great Barrier Reef on a rather choppy day, I think we were lucky to be able to get out on that day

There are several options for reef trips that leave from the Island as well as shorter half day tours out to the Whitsunday islands and Whitehaven beach.
