Wye River Rockpools – Short Note

Heading down the Great Ocean Road? Time your trip for low tide and make time to stop at some of the coastlines amazing rockpools!

I spent some time rambling along the Wye River Intertidal Zone and on first glance couldn’t see much but once you get your eye in for them, you will find sea stars and anenomes hidden in some pools.

These were my two favourite finds.

Creatures that live in the intertidal zone actually have to be pretty tough as they live in a shallow and exposed environment. They cope with an amazing array of environmental influences such as tide, pounding waves, changing weather and predators.

Keep an eye out for other types of native sea stars such as the 11 Arm and Biscuit Sea Stars and if you sport the invasive Northern Pacific outside of Port Phillip Bay be sure to report  (it can be confused with the native granular sea star though so make sure you are sure!).

There are rockpools all along the Great Ocean Road, so don’t just drive past, get out and explore! But always remember to be safe around rocks, don’t turn your back on the ocean and only walk around rock pools on a calm day!

How to get there?

Head along the Great Ocean Road. Wye River is approximately 2h 14 minutes SW along the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne or 1h 26 minutes from Geelong.
