A vast and beautiful place, the high country of Victoria has plenty of opportunities for camping from remote bush sites to popular caravan parks. Find some of the best 2wd accessible campsites for your next high country adventure.
This is an ongoing list that is updated as I visit new camping spots (2wd only as I don’t currently have a 4wd for up to date campground notes).
National Park Camping
Alpine National Park
Buckety Plains Campground
A bushcampground tucked away a short drive off the main road in the Alpine National Park, Buckety Plain is surrounded by gums and has a drop toilet. For more info read my Buckety Plain Campground notes.
Mt Buffalo National Park
Lake Catani
A truly gorgeous bush campground, Lake Catani is perched high on the top of Mt Buffalo surrounded by National Park and close to a huge variety of bushwalks. My aunty loves this park so much she visits every year.
Lake Catani is only seasonally available to drive in, in winter its accessible by foot/ski-in only from the carpark (and you will be required to follow the Alpine chain rules in winter). You must book prior to visiting, for more information visit Parks Victoria.
State & Foresty Park Camping
Stanley State Forest
Yackandandah Creek Camping (MTB Trailhead Camping)
A series of campsites along the Yackandandah Creek in Stanley State Forest, many of these campgrounds are perfectly located for accessing the Yackandandah Mountain bike trailheads.
As an added bonus the creek is pretty place to camp which plenty of birds around and we even had a Koala visit our campsite. However being a state park, this can be a busy campground. Read more on the Yackandandah Creek campsites.
Town Camping
Love to be able to walk into the pub for dinner or be close to the action there are plenty of places to camp in the high country while still be close to town.

A popular and busy tourist town, there is always something going on in Bright. It hosts markets, car festivals, photography conferences, concerts and has endless MTB and bike tracks, river activities and is close to the snow.
You can adventure for weekends on end with Bright town as your base which is why its so popular and has many return visitors.
