A nice short walk at Rawnsley Park Station for views onto the bluff, the caravan park and cabin accommodation and out towards the other mountain ranges. At the right time of year after rain, the start of the walk is surrounded by a sea of yellow flowers.
Quick Fact Box – Twidale Top Walk
Track notes and photos are for supplementary information to help you see what a walk and experience may be like. Conditions outdoors can change quickly, please ALWAYS use official government or business resources and maps for navigation and safety information. Getting There: This walk leaves from the Rawnsley Bluff Carpark, the road turnoff is signposted as ‘Rawnsley Bluff’ Walk Distance: 2km return** Track Grade: NA Elevation: 519m** Dogs: Dogs are allowed on lead. At the time I visited in August 2022 dogs were allowed on all walks except the ones that enter the national Park (Rawnsley Bluff Walk and Ferntree Falls). Walk Highlights: Elevated views of the bluff, the station campground, and accommodation as well as views out to other ranges. Accessibility: Not suitable for wheelchairs. The path is rocky, particularly through the uphill section so you must be able to walk on uneven surface. There is a rock you could rest on and wait for others at the start of the uphill climb. Mobile Reception: Telstra* & Optus but not Vodafone or other carriers (I confirmed which carriers had a reception with station reception). With Telstra, I had basically full reception – enough reception to video call. *I have been caught out before in remote areas when I was previously with Boost, it may have changed but Boost didn’t work on any of telstras remote area towers a few years ago, even though its owned by them. **Source Rawnsley Park Station Walking Notes Map |

Track notes for Twidale Top Walk
Getting There
The Rawnsley Park Station turn off is signposted from Flinders Ranges Way. You follow the Rawnsley entrance road for a few km, past the station hill lookout (sign posted just with a camera symbol sign) and take the turnoff to ‘Rawnsley Bluff’ (as the Twidale Walk leaves from the same carpark as the Bluff walk), marked as ‘Rawnsley Bluff Car Park’ on google maps.
The carpark area
The carpark is next to a dry creek with pretty trees and an outlook across the station.
The Twidale Walk
Starts off near a creekline at the same trailhead as Rawnsley Bluff and Ferntree Falls. You head through the gate and turn to the right, following the pole track markers to Twidale (the station advises to leave gates as you find them). You immediately start an uphill climb on a wide path to begin with.
There’s a large rock before the rocky section starts you can rest on before continuing on or waiting/turning back if you can’t walk on uneven ground.
From here you climb through the steep rocky outcrop of until you get to the plateau top.
There are view as your walk up the hill back towards the campground and once you get to the top you are standing on the Mesa, which according to the sign at the top is a remnant flat top hill with steep sides.
Twidale Top Mesa
Once you finish climbing you will get views in 360 degrees depending on where you are standing on the Mesa. You can see the camping ground and cabin accommodation and further into the station when your first get to the top.
You can continue along the path to the other end of the mesa? For views towards more ranges and the bluff.
At the top there is an information sign about the Geology of the region.
From here you return the way you came back to your car.
